Lawn & Garden Tips

March Tips

Fertilize Everything - Most plants grow the most in Spring, so feeding them now will yield the best results this year. If you need to replace soil washed away by rain, use a PowerMix with ProPower Growth Formula Premium Soil in convenient bags: All-Purpose Potting Soil, Outdoor Planting Mix or Soil Conditioner. Their time-release fertilizers deliver nutrients up to 45 days.

Plant Spring and Summer Perennials - Spring-blooms include alstoemeria, armeria, bearded iris, columbine, geraniums, nicotiana and veronica. Summer-garden varieties include agapanthus, coreopsis, daylily, penstemon, Shasta daisy, tulbaghia, and yarrow. Even late summer and fall flowers like chrysanthemum, helianthus and physostegia can be planted now.

Plant Shrubs and Vegetables - Buy camellias and azaleas in bloom now and plant in amended soil, leaving the root ball an inch higher than the ground. Cool-season and warm-season vegetables include beet, cabbage, carrot, corn, endive, kale, leaf lettuce, New Zealand spinach, onion, pea, potato, radish, sunflower, Swiss chard and early varieties of tomato.

Prune Fuchsias - Shape hanging kinds back to container sides. For upright kinds, trim a little less growth that grew last year so that two eyes where leaves are attached remain.
Repot Water Plants - Most aquatics need dividing and repotting because they grow fast. For lilies and other aquatics, use ordinary clay soils and amend with ProPower Growth Formula Soil Conditioner.

Weed Control - A natural way to protect from weeds is to use soil amendments to add vigor to plants and crowd out weeds before they can get started. Start by weeding first before applying any soil amendment.
